Regent Park Revitalization Update: Daniels Corporation Shares Progress

At a recent Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) update meeting, Daniels Corporation provided a comprehensive progress report on the ongoing revitalization of Regent Park. Allison Platt, Director of Development at Daniels, outlined the ambitious plans for Block One, located at the intersection of Gerrard and Parliament Streets. The project, expected to be completed by fall 2025, will feature a 10-story mid-rise building, a 25-story tower, and 12 retail units, bringing new residential and commercial opportunities to the neighbourhood.

A key highlight of the update was Daniels’ $5 million affordable homeownership program, presented by Heela Markhail. This initiative enables 12 Regent Park residents to purchase homes through an innovative model that combines traditional financing with community service contributions. In addition to this, Daniels has actively reinvested in the local economy through social procurement initiatives, allocating $200,000 toward projects like commissioning community artists to design public amenities such as benches and bike racks.

The neighbourhood’s commercial landscape has also evolved, with recent additions like Ultra Pilates and restaurants such as Tahini and Sushi 96, showcasing Daniels’ commitment to enhancing the vibrancy and diversity of Regent Park. These developments aim to balance economic growth with community enrichment, creating spaces that reflect and serve the area’s cultural identity.

Addressing Community Concerns

The update included a Q&A session, where Daniels and TCHC representatives addressed critical community concerns. One recurring topic was the allocation of housing within the development. While the split is 60% market-rate and 40% affordable housing, representatives emphasized that the actual space allocation between the two categories is nearly equal. This approach is intended to promote inclusivity and equitable living conditions for all residents.

Questions were also raised about changes to condominium plans in phases 4 and 5. Developers clarified that these modifications were driven solely by infrastructure challenges, ensuring the revitalization remains aligned with long-term community needs.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Affordable Homeownership

Daniels and its partners remain committed to increasing affordable homeownership opportunities. Efforts are underway to secure additional city funding for future initiatives. Plans include collaborative programs led by Daniels, Tridel, and TCHC, designed to help more residents achieve the dream of homeownership. These initiatives reinforce the overarching goal of fostering long-term stability, growth, and prosperity within Regent Park.
